Puppy Mill Is A Four-Letter Word

If there is one major blight upon the retail dog world, it is the existence of puppy mills. Puppy mill is a four-letter word. It is a blight on civilized society. It deprives many animals of a healthy, happy and long-lived existence.

Puppy Mills Described And Defined

Puppy mills are sometimes referred to as Puppy Farms. These are the equivalent of factory farms. They are places where certain types of people breed pure bred and/or designer dogs. They breed them with the sole purpose of making a profit. Their market is the never-satisfied demands of large and small pet and retail stores.

Puppy mills are not renowned for either their hygiene or their spacious cages. Many animals are crowded together in pitiful conditions. They may lie in their own excrement. There is no play or interaction time at many of the puppy mills. It is not perceived as part of the basic requirements of a factory dog producer.

The choice to breed is never an option. Many animals too young or too old to reproduce are required to pump out a product puppy again and again. All for the love of money. It is never about the breed or the actual animal. As in factory farms, the puppy is a product not a living entity. Problems With The Puppies Produced In Puppy Mills

There are a number of reasons why you should not consider purchasing a puppy mill dog.

- You do not know either the sires or dams. Moreover, you do not know anything about their background. This includes physical and genetic traits and possible health issues. You are not informed of any ancestry.

- Puppy mills do not screen for any inherited health problems. They cannot tell you whether the breed has a propensity for hip dysplasia, eye diseases or breeding difficulties. This is abetted by minimal or no reputable veterinary care. Physical examinations remain restricted to the physical appearance. In the case of puppy mill dogs, this is deceptive. The animal may look fit, but he or she may actually be suffering from a variety of health-related problems.

- A puppy mill always favors volume over quality. They produce solely to meet the need of the publicly frequented pet stores.

- You cannot register with a kennel a puppy mill puppy. They do not have papers.

- Puppies in puppy mills are usually lacking from any human socialization. Contact with humans is usually minimal. Depending upon the age and breed, this can affect their social development process.

There are many good reasons why you should never buy a puppy from a puppy mill. Above I have listed only a few. In general, it is the unnecessarily inhumane treatment of another species. Even if you have no intense feeling for animals, consider the negative impact upon the lives of many. Those who purchase and bond with a puppy mill dog may find themselves locked in an expensive battle.

They want to save their puppy. In order to do so, they run up high vet bills. Children and adults alike have their hearts broken when the puppy, instead of flourishing, dies. It pays not to buy from a puppy mill. Do yourself a favor and always ask the pet store or supplier the source of the dogs. Ask educated questions. It is high time this highly questionable and inhumane practice ceased forever.
